Snowfall Trends in the South and Central Appalachians 1964-1995

Suzanne Hartley

Variations in seasonal (November-March) snowfall are examined for stations in the South-Central Appalachian region from West Virginia to Alabama. Long-term trends (downward) are apparent only at stations where seasonal snowfall is strongly correlated with a seasonal index of the North Atlantic Oscillation teleconnection pattern. Such trends are most significant in a band extending from eastern Tennessee through western North Carolina and southwestern Virginia. Elsewhere in the region, trends are of marginal or no significance. This has led to marked changes in "snowfall gradients" across the region.
