Snow Damage to Spruce in a Subartcic Treeline Environment, Schefferville, Québec

Dany Gareau and Hardy B. Granberg

Near Schefferville (55N, 67W), snow is a principal agent influencing the vegetation cover. In order to assess microenvironmental influences, an inventory of snow-related damages and associated growth-form modifications of Picea glauca and Picea mariana has been made in the Schefferville Digital Transect (SDT), where spatial variations in microenvironmental factors can be quantified. The paper presents a photographic inventory of the principal types of damage and the resulting growth forms of spruce and a preliminary analysis of environmental conditions favoring their occurrence.
